José María Hinojosa Cobacho, El Tempranillo, was a Spanish bandit who frequented the Ronda mountain range at the beginning of the 19th century and became one of the most renowned outlaws in Spain. Bandits were armed thieves who dedicated themselves to smuggling, looting and kidnapping travellers andpassers-by on the roads of the Andalusian mountains. El Tempranillo, born in Córdoba but adopted by Málaga, received this nickname for his precocious activity: it is believed that at the age of 15 he was already working as a bandit. After a lifetime as a bandit, El Tempranillo would die at the age of 30 in an ambush set up by another outlaw, El Barberillo, near his residence in Alameda (Málaga).
The composer was inspired by the life of the Spanish bandit to compose this fantasy for trumpet and band, a commission from Puerto Rican trumpeter Yturbides that will form part of a larger project. This is "Yo necesito un pasodoble", a recording of original music for trumpet and band with a Spanish character, which also includes the masters Ferrer Ferran and David Rivas.
