LA LUZ DE MAFASCA was ordered by the musical group Banda Municilal de Pájara, Fuerteventura, for the 1st soloist concert 2021.
Legend has it that some shepherds were walking home after a hard day’s work in the Canary island of Fuerteventura. Tired and hungry, they decided to stop along the way to light a fire and roast a small lamb.
When they began to gather the wood they needed to light the fire, among the collected remains they found a small wooden cross. The shepherds knew that in Fuerteventura it is customary to place a cross at the place where a person dies, but as they were starving they ignored this tradition and used the cross to light the fire.
Slowly, the flames burnt down the wooden cross and, before the astonished eyes of the shepherds, a light emerged from the ashes, leaping from one side to the other. The shepherds ran away, trying to leave behind the luminous object, which was none other than the soul of the deceased. It is said that nowadays the light still appears to travellers who pass through the uninhabited areas of Fuerteventura at night, perhaps to guide them or perhaps with the intention of not being forgotten.
The Light of Mafasca is located on the island of Fuerteventura. It has no fixed route. It appears in the darkness of the night. It is shaped as an incandescent ball and, according to the locals, it has an intelligent behaviour: the Light seems to react to the emotions of the witnesses.
